About Blackstone Foundation Library
Blackstone Foundation Library (BFL) is an Afrocentric non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Knowledge of Self through a culture of learning, literacy, and community engagement. Through access to culturally relevant books, educational programming, and community partnerships, BFL empowers children, youth, families, and community members to discover, celebrate, and strengthen their identities through reading and lifelong learning.
We believe that when young minds encounter literature that inspires self-discovery, confidence, and critical thinking, they are empowered to create positive change within themselves and their communities.
Position Summary
The Board of Directors plays a vital leadership and governance role in supporting Blackstone Foundation Library’s mission, vision, and long-term sustainability. As a volunteer Director, you will contribute your expertise, leadership, and perspective to help guide the organization's strategic direction, financial stewardship, fundraising efforts, community engagement, and policy development.
Time Commitment
• Approximately 5–10 hours per month
• Attendance at regular board meetings and the Annual General Meeting
• Participation on at least one committee or task force
• Directors may serve up to two consecutive two-year terms, subject to board approval and membership voting requirements
Key Responsibilities
• Actively participate in Board of Directors meetings and organizational events
• Support strategic planning, governance, and organizational development
• Contribute expertise and collaborate effectively with fellow board members and staff
• Serve as an ambassador and advocate for Blackstone Foundation Library within the community
• Assist with fundraising initiatives, donor engagement, and resource development efforts
• Promote awareness of Blackstone’s programs, services, and impact
• Ensure compliance with organizational bylaws, policies, and legal obligations
• Exercise fiduciary responsibilities with care, loyalty, integrity, and accountability
• Identify and disclose potential conflicts of interest and abstain from related decision-making when appropriate
• Support the long-term sustainability and growth of the organization through leadership and stewardship
